PROJECT ELIMINATE KICKS OFF WITH WRISTBAND SALE 

    The Kiwanis Club of Sheffield is kicking off a campaign to eliminate deaths from tetanus in impoverished countries around the world.   Project Eliminate is a joint effort between Kiwanis International and UNICEF to provide tetanus inoculations to women of child-bearing age in some 36 countries around the world. The woman passes the immunization on to her newborn.   The three initial shots cost only $1.80. The local club’s first fund-raising effort is the sale of rubber wristbands saying “I saved a life for $1.80.”  

The local Project Eliminate committee is also seeking corporate and individual pledges, gifts, and sponsorships. Future fund-raisers in the campaign, which will last until 2015, include dances, plant and card sales, walkathons, and contests.   While mothers are also at risk, UNICEF predicts that a newborn dies of tetanus every nine minutes. In impoverished areas of the world, tetanus spores are transmitted through the soil; mothers and newborns are particularly vulnerable during childbirth.  

In Great Barrington, the wristbands are now available at Smitty’s Sandwich Shop, Stockbridge Road, and at Seward’s Tires, Route 7. In Sheffield they can be found at Gulotta’s Mobil Station, Silk’s Variety, Shear Image, and Berkshire Salon, all on Route 7.

Warmer weather is here and that means more outdoor activities and events in each of our communities. The Kiwanis Cafe will be serving food at many of these events. In fact, Deb Wright has already accepted some engagements in May. She needs volunteers to help at each event. Don't be shy, sign up and help out.

You may or may not know that we must guarantee at least 12 dinners each Tuesday night at The Bridge. If there are not enough members dining, the Club must pay the difference. Consider having a drink of your choice and dinner each Tueday. Dinner is served at 6:30 and only costs $15.00 for three courses - a bargain.
